Kristine Morgan, CMP
Our Member Spotlight this month shines on Kristine Morgan, CMP, an Event Planner with George P. Johnson in Austin, as well as Director of Monthly Programs and Professional Development for our chapter! Though it’s incredibly fun to peek into members’ lives in some depth, your Spotlight editors found Kristine’s brevity during a very hectic month awfully refreshing!
So, tell everyone a little bit about yourself. Where are you from, where were you educated, and unless you’re from here, how’d you get to the Hill Country? I grew up in San Antonio and moved to Austin a couple of years after college. I went to Texas A&M (WHOOP!) and this is my second time living in Austin. I was in the Chicago area from May 2007 to July 2010. How’d you get into planning? I worked on the supplier side, both in hotel and CVB positions, and I realized that I wanted to be the people I was working with. Your current position in the chapter is as a board member, and as Director of Monthly Programs/Professional Development. What does the latter entail and what do you need the most help with, from volunteers? It's all about education, primarily the chapter meetings. What I need most from volunteers is fresh ideas for content. Second is venues to host chapter meetings. What do you see as our chapter’s biggest strength? We're a fiscally fit chapter with a lot of awesome members!
Give a little tidbit of advice to new planners (and/or suppliers, since you have been one). Be prepared to work your way up the ladder. Meetings/hospitality is very much an industry where you have to work your way up. And the job market in Austin for planners isn't very strong, in my opinion. But try not to let that discourage you! What two television channels do you watch most frequently? Why? What’s on? I don't even have cable right now (long story there), so I haven't watched TV much at all since my husband and I moved into our house right after Thanksgiving. When I do watch TV, I love good entertainment like E! and Bravo, etc. Who has the worst name that you know? (Penn of Penn & Teller has a daughter named Moxie Crimefighter. Beat that.) Matthew McConaughey's nephew, Miller Lyte. What is your greatest phobia? Probably cockroaches. Gross!
The Community Outreach Committee is excited to announce the date for the 3rd Annual Strikes for Tikes Bowl-A-Thon (and the memorable costume contest!) benefiting Sammy’s House. The event will be Friday, March 30, 2012 at 300 AMF Showplace Lanes from 5:30-8:00pm. Last year we broke the chapter record for the most money raised for a charity event with $11,000 going to help the children at Sammy’s House. We are looking forward to doing it even bigger and better this year. Make sure to keep a lookout for the formal invitation and mark Friday, March 30 on your calendar. The leadership of MPI-THCC would like to thank the following sponsors of the 2012 Mid-Year Board Retreat. This retreat allowed our leaders to regroup, refresh and indulge in some creative thinking. Our gratitude to Marianela "Nelly" Eichler with the Holiday Inn San Antonio Downtown - Market Square for serving as the host property, and a special thanks to Alysia Roden and the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau for a fabulous dinner at La Marguerita!

As the use of mobile event apps continues to explode, there’s an increasing demand by attendees to have easy-access, barrier-free and, hopefully, cost-free Wi-Fi in meeting spaces and sleeping rooms. This article by Corbin Ball, CMP, CSPcovers the needs and the challenges inherent in providing for them. Find inspiration to work out on the road from Training Mobs. This online community can help you find a group to exercise with in locations across the continent. We couldn’t find any in Texas, but we love the concept and thought this could kick start some groups across the Lone Star State. This new social network is perfect for travelers looking to find workout buddies. Visit their website!

Let’s not be so serious this week: Take a mental break at the airport with “Scramble With Friends” (free if you can stomach the ads). Ever played Boggle? It’s Boggle!
