The banquet is over, the awards have been awarded, the gavel’s fallen on the auction items, and the sponsors have been thanked, and now…It’s time to get familiar with your new 2012-2013 Board of Directors!

This organizational chart and list of directors are “musts” for your office bulletin board. When you know who’s in charge of what, you’re on the road to getting involved…and the chapter needs you! Also see the latest chapter annual reportfor an interesting snapshot of the 2011-2012 year.

Layton Rasco

With Father's Day around the corner and the new board installation right behind us, this week the Spotlight shines on Layton Rasco, a new board member and proud Papa.

How long have you been a member of MPI?

Almost 4 years. I should always remember that because it is the same as my wedding anniversary.

What committee’s have you served on?
Although I have officially only served on the Registration Committee, I feel a part of the Spotlight and Communication Committees through my work on the newsletter and the website.

What board position are you taking on this year?
I will be coming on to the board as Director of Finance and Investments. Luckily, Sherry Palmer has done a great job in her term and will still be around as VP of Finance to show me the ropes.

What do you do? What do you love about your job?

I am Chief Operations Officer for Attendee Management Inc. In a small company, this means that I do a little bit of everything but with a focus on how we can use new technology to provide better service to our clients. The best thing about my job is that it is a family company, so I get to work with my dad, sister, and a couple of aunts every day. Officially, we have more people on our team named something other than Rasco, but they all feel like family.

With Father’s Day coming up, we want to know what was your "A-ha! I'm a dad" moment?
The first time I held my daughter. Yes, it's a pretty obvious answer, but 30 seconds before that, I wasn't a dad. Then, A-ha!

What is the most important lesson you want to teach your kids?
"Father knows best" The sooner she learns to follow my every command without question, the better life will be. But since that will never happen, I'll say to always find the fun in life. If you want to ride on the back of the shopping cart down the hill in the parking lot to the car, do it. However, after a certain age, it is inappropriate to scream "WEEEEE!!".

What's the hardest part about being a dad?
I've only been a dad for 18 months, and so far it has been pretty easy. I'm lucky to have the happiest, smartest and cutest daughter ever. If I had to pick something, it would be trying not to get frustrated when I want her to sleep but she has other ideas.

Tell us the most important thing you have learned from your kids.
Patience and flexibility. You can try to have a plan or a schedule, but the more important it is to you to follow that plan, it is inversely that much less important to a kid.

Do you find yourself talking to your daughter and thinking, “I sound just like my dad?”
All the time. I think is it unavoidable to emulate your role models, but most people in the chapter would agree that my dad, Jeff Rasco, is a pretty good person to sound like.

2012 MPI THCC Annual Awards Banquet Recap!

On June 1, more than one hundred MPI-THCC members and their guests traveled "Back to the Future" in style …radical 80's style, that is! Attendees were “Pretty in Pink” and “Footloose” in their best 80’s fashions. Through the magic of the RK Group and Freeman, the Historic Sunset Station in San Antonio was transformed into an amazingly over-the-top, neon-filled tribute to all things 80's. From Pac-Man to pop stars; from MTV to Madonna; from DeLoreans to divas…the banquet had it all and certainly paid tribute to one of our most… colorful decades ever.

A gnarly silent auction and tubular food and drink added to the excitement of the evening. The festivities culminated with the swearing in of our 2012-2013 Board of Directors (we’ll skip the “Goonies” joke here!). Here’s hoping that their upcoming year is “Some Kind of Wonderful.”

Congratulations to all the totally awesome nominees and award winners! Everyone who was nominated is truly a “Top Gun!” Your 2012 Award Winners (a separate list is available here)

A huge “thank you” to the banquet committee, the silent auction committee, the sponsors, and all our members who made this year’s banquet a massive success. And, of course, a special thank you to our resident “Real Genius” Joe Bedsole, CTA, for his devotion and commitment to the chapter this year. Thank you, Joe! We hope you will remain active with our chapter for many strange decades to come!

Hail to the Sponsors!
Gratitude beyond words to the following suppliers and members who donated generously to the 2012 silent auction. This year’s auction and raffle ticket sales generated over $8,100 for chapter CE programs and scholarships. We sincerely beyond grateful for this display of support, unity and friendship.

MPI THCC Spotlight News

A personal thank you goes out to Emily Mathews and Mandy Begley,  our two 2011-2012 Spotlight Committee Chairs for their hard work this year. Publishing this newsletter twice each month is a huge undertaking – their work to publish relevant, timely, new, and fun information is greatly appreciated! Congratulations on your award as Committee Chairs of the Year- so deserved! Emily, your wit and humor will be greatly missed on this committee, we hope you return as a guest contributor when time permits!

As a committee, we’ve decided to make a slight change to the newsletter. The Spotlight will be published once a month beginning in July. We hope to be able to provide more and even better articles in these Spotlights and hope you enjoy more impactful, less frequent email. If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to reach out to Paulina van Eeden Hill, paulina@txpta.org.

When John was promoted to his first management job, his boss gave him a book about twelve traits a leader must have. His father gave him a different book about the characteristics of great leaders. His sister sent him an article about the new leadership. And his brother-in-law sent him a different article on the same subject, but with different advice.

Houston’s iconic Astrodome may face the wrecking ball. It was once the envy of other cities, a fully air-conditioned facility with a translucent roof that kept out the heat and humidity, gave synthetic grass its name, made Houston a sports entertainment destination and sparked the imaginations of baseball lovers, concert-goers and some of the country's most creative minds. Read about it here

The Westin Memorial City in Houston celebrated its first year of operation in March and has already received the following accolades: Convention South Annual Reader’s Choice Award for Top New Hotel in the South (1 of 23 hotels) and a AAA 4- Diamond Rating.

Like it or not (and who does?), hurricane season is beginning. Here are a few useful links:
TxDOT will continue to use Twitter feeds and Facebook to deliver storm preparedness, road condition and evacuation information to social media users. Follow these for up-to-the-minute transportation news and local traffic information.

Storm-related Twitter hashtags will be provided for an easy way to find important hurricane information. A new feed, @TxDOTalert, is also available exclusively for emergency-related information. If you believe you will not be evacuating during a hurricane, please prepare a survival kit.

Try the free SecureSafe app for the iPad and iPhone (and probably other devices). It’s…safe. And…secure. It holds all of your user names and passwords alphabetically (example: Chase Bank) and no more having to retrieve and reset passwords. All. The. Time. 503 out of 594 gave it five stars, and the rest were mainly four stars. That’s pretty good!

You (possibly) heard it here first: Our beloved Mandy Begley, CMP and her husband Jim are expecting their first baby on December 5, 2012. Congratulations to you both!

Congratulations as well to Susan Greenberg, CMP, CASE. Her appointment to MPI International’s Chapter Advisory Council has been extended another year! Straight from Dallas HQ: “You have been a tremendous asset to this council, and I sincerely look forward to the coming year. Thank you for your continued loyalty to MPI and to the MPI Texas Hill Country Chapter.” No surprise there…way to go, Susan!

Immediate Past President Joe Bedsole, CTA has now earned his CTA certification. He is now an official certified tourism ambassador for the Arlington/DFW area. Love those three little letters, Joe!
