Hill Country Spotlight 3.2.10

For the past few weeks we’ve thrilled with the victories and agonized with the defeats. If you just can’t get enough of all things Olympic, this trivia is for you!

Freestyle Skiing
The word "mogul" comes from the Austrian word "mugel," which means "small hill" or "mound."

Figure Skating

The men's 2006 gold medal winner, Russian Yevgeny Plushenko, is the first skater in history to successfully land a quad-triple-triple jump combination in competition. Canadian Kevin Reynolds, 17, achieved the feat in 2008.
Curling
Curling is one of four winter Olympic sports contested indoors. The other three are hockey, figure skating, and speed skating.

Luge
German luge master Georg Hackl is the only athlete to medal in the same event in five straight games.

Snowboarding
According to the National Sporting Goods Association, U.S. consumers spent $309 million on snowboarding equipment in 2008. That's more than hockey and football equipment combined ($249 million).

Skeleton
American Jennison Heaton won the first skeleton gold medal in 1928, beating his brother John, who took the silver, by one second. John Heaton, at age 39, went on to win the silver again in 1948, finishing second to Italy's Nino Bibbia. American Jim Shea, Jr., won the men's gold in the 2002 return of the sport to the Olympics. The 2002 Salt Lake City Games also witnessed the debut of women's skeleton.

Ice Hockey
Ice hockey made its Olympic debut at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium. The first Winter Olympics didn't take place until 1924.

Speed Skating
At the 2006 Turin Olympics, American Shani Davis became the first African-American athlete to win gold in an individual event, the 1,000 m. He also took home silver in the 1,500 m event. Davis is the tallest American speed skater, standing at 6'2" tall.

Alpine Skiing
American skier Lindsey Vonn was awarded a cow by local dairy farmers for her World Cup win in Val D'Isere, France, in 2005. She had a choice between the cow or an additional $1,200 in prize money. She went with the cow.

Bobsled
It's been 22 years since the Jamaican bobsled team made its debut at the Olympics.

Ski Jumping
The oldest man to receive a Winter Olympics medal is 83-year-old Anders Haugen. The Norwegian-American actually received his ski jump bronze medal 50 years after he competed in 1924 when a scoring error was discovered in 1974.

All-Time Medal Standings
Only two countries south of the equator have ever won medals at the Olympic Winter Games—Australia and New Zealand.

VOLUNTEER LEADER OF THE MONTH
Jeanne Feuille, CMP

Kansas City…Dallas…Austin.  Jeanne Feuille progressively moved southward, and has found her niche in Austin as the THCC-MPI Volunteer of the Month!  Jeanne has been a member of MPI for over 25 years, and enjoys the close-knit group that makes up the Texas Hill Country Chapter.  She really loves being involved with the local MPI events, and that enthusiasm made her an easy choice as the VLOM.

After growing up in Kansas City and becoming involved planning conferences for both Corporate and Association clients, Jeanne made her way south to Dallas.  She spent seven years at Spear One, a full-service meeting management firm based in Dallas managing incentive, association and corporate meetings for several key clients.  Jeanne’s most recent move, in January, 2009, brought her to the Hill Country Chapter and her new home in Austin.  After arriving in Austin, she put her planning experience (and MPI membership) to work, joining Experient, one of the preeminent international conference and event planning companies today, as a National Account Manager in July of 2009.
Jeanne’s involvement in the Hill Country Chapter extends beyond the monthly meetings.  She also chair’s the Member Retention Committee.  One of Jeanne’s future MPI goals is to become a Board Member, looks like she’s on her way!
Besides her involvement with THCC-MPI, Jeanne also enjoys teaching fitness classes five times a week and spending time with her teenage daughter.  In fact, Jeanne and her daughter, Jordan along with Jeanne’s fiancé, Michael, and his two children, recently spent quality time on a Caribbean cruise.  As a testament to her business networking, she even ran into a member of the San Antonio CVB on the cruise ship!
Jeanne’s focus for 2010 will be to grow her Experient business, she has already gained new clients and looks forward to networking with her MPI and industry partners.  She wants to turn “cold calling” into “warm calling”, and her MPI involvement, including Volunteer of the Month, is helping to meet that goal.

Congratulations Little Miss CAE
Congratulations to our friend Julie Courtney for joining the elite group of Certified Association Executives. Julie Courtney, CMP, CAE recently completed the CAE program and received this prestigious destination. The Certified Association Executive (CAE) program is designed to elevate professional standards, enhance individual performance, and designate association professionals who demonstrate the knowledge essential to the practice of association management. Founded in 1960, the CAE program stands as a mark of excellence and has evolved to reflect what it takes to manage an association in today's challenging climate.

Earning and maintaining the CAE is a three-part process. Candidates must first meet eligibility requirements and submit an application. The next step is to sit for and pass the CAE exam. Once a candidate has earned the credential they must maintain it by fulfilling certification renewal requirements every three years.

Stock Show officials planning to tie next year's event in with Super Bowl XLV
BY SUSAN SCHROCK
sschrock@star-telegram.com

FORT WORTH -- Stock Show officials hope that fans flocking to Cowboys Stadium next year for Super Bowl XLV will want to see some real cowboys in action.

The 2011 Super Bowl is scheduled for Feb. 6, which is the last day of the 115th annual Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. While the regularly scheduled events are expected to stay the same, Stock Show officials are considering special events and activities to tie into the big game in Arlington.

"With the nation's eye on North Texas, it's a very unique opportunity to showcase the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, which is the oldest stock show in the country, as well as shine a remarkable light on the sport of professional rodeo," said Bradford Barnes, the show's executive vice president and general manager. "After all, Fort Worth is where the West begins."

Because the game is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors to North Texas, Stock Show officials have urged regular exhibitors and vendors to book hotel rooms for next year's three-week show now, said Shanna Weaver, the show's publicity manager.

Weaver said the Super Bowl's potential to draw new visitors to the event has been on Stock Show organizers' minds since Cowboys Stadium was selected as the venue in 2007. This will be the region's first experience hosting the Super Bowl.

"Everybody thinks of Texas with longhorns and cowboys. Where better to find that than the Stock Show?" Weaver said. "We really see it as an opportunity to showcase what we're all about."

Show organizers didn't mention specifically what kinds of Super Bowl-related activities may be planned. Planning for the 2011 Stock Show begins in late April or early May, Weaver said.

North Texas Super Bowl XLV Logo Revealed

Just minutes ago, in South Florida, the official logo for Super Bowl XLV was unveiled. It was designed by the NFL, rather than our local host committee. If there were any doubts that it was Cowboys Stadium itself that convinced NFL owners to bring the game to North Texas, those may be put to rest by seeing how prominently the $1 billion ball field is featured in the logo. The use of the Lombardi trophy also evokes the winning tradition of the Cowboys nicely.

As logos go, it beats the pants off  XLIV, XLIII, XLII, or Houston’s Super Bowl. Sure, it’s metallic sheen exudes a somewhat cold exterior. But I think that fits the image that the Cowboys themselves like to project. They don’t try to be your cuddly local team. They just want to be un-apologetically awesome.

Since we’re going to have to see this thing all over the place for the next year, let’s be thankful for how well it’s been done.

Hope for Haiti
As a professional community we've rallied together in the past year to prove our worth in the business world.  However, this week, on an individual and organizational level we've rallied together for an even more meaningful cause - Haiti.

In addition to the US$5,000 that the MPI Foundation donated to the International Red Cross, many of our chapters and members rallied to the cause.

We appreciate greatly all of the participation of our members who have helped us continue to grow our list of confirmed legitimate relief efforts. We know that the recovery can not and will not happen over night.  So we encourage everyone to keep sharing great opportunities for all of us to help, like the MPI Atlantic Canada Chapter did today when they announced Speak Out for Haiti.
